This is the expert opinion of Matjaž Svetek (team Adria4ocean’s carbon composite expert),the person who build Adria Mobil 509 and 510:

»Andraž was lucky (with an obvious irony in the word lucky) that the damage on his boat is about 10 – 15 cm infront of the bowsprit guy and only 40 cm behind the chainplate. This would mean a damage that would surely lead to a very demanding repair or even end of the race. Had the damage happened infront of the chainplate this would also be very tricky because this is where the water balasts are – after a damage like that, he wouldn’t be able to fully fill up the balasts. If Andraž will get the time lost back, than my opinion is that he made a wise choice to go back and repair the damage – leg two is long and dangerous. Speaking from a structural point of view the damage is not problematic beacuse there is no pressure on the boat at that place. Also these boats don’t have a real junction in the classical sense of the word., so the hole would not extend and would hold probably just as well had he only fixed it with ducktape and later fixed it properly in a windless situation. But this is extremely difficult for a sailor especially if he want’s to sail fast – he doesn’t have time for this kind of repairs during sailing. So it was the best possible decision to go back to the marina.«

Marek Galkiewicz Goly was active again… :) You can find on his website a video of the happening in Madeira after Andraž’s accident (On the bottom of the page video titled “Andraz after collision”). I usually refrain from writing personal comments on the blog, but this time, after watching the footage I can’t help it but write that Andraž is a pure inspiration speaking in terms of keeping his cool. ZEN MASTER! All I can think to myself is: “watch and learn”!

It looks as thoug the guys have had some calms during the night. Kristian lost a lot of places, he is now 45th, Andraž has climbed up the ladder and is now 58th. The fleet is still relatively close together, the gaps are small (it almosts seems as though the fleet is more spread out by latitude than longitude). The course of the race today will mostly be decided according to who gets the wind first.

And to answer the burning question of the last few days: will Andraž get the lost time back, and when will we find out? Andraž has to file a redress after arriving to the finish in Salvador. The race comittee than adresses the issue, speaks to both parties and makes a decision. So all we can do for now is wait and see.
